There were no climate-science bombshells from James E. Hansen on Monday
on his trip to Capitol Hill at the invitation of some House Democrats,
who wanted to commemorate his momentous global warming testimony 20
years earlier. On that front, he said everything he has been saying for
years: unabated warming would erode the ice sheets, flood coastal
cities and drive many species into extinction. But there was a much discussed recommendation in both his oral
presentation and a written statement he prepared beforehand: that the
heads of oil and coal companies who knowingly delayed action on curbing
greenhouse gas emissions were committing a crime.

| Hansen: 'This Is The Last Chance'

Exactly 20 years after warning America about global warming, a top NASA
scientist said the situation has gotten so bad that the world's only
hope is drastic action. James Hansen told Congress on Monday that the world has long passed the
"dangerous level" for greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and needs to
get back to 1988 levels. He said Earth's atmosphere can only stay this
loaded with man-made carbon dioxide for a couple more decades without
changes such as mass extinction, ecosystem collapse and dramatic sea
level rises.

| Hansen: Put Oil Firm Chiefs On Trial

James Hansen, one of the world's leading climate scientists, will today
call for the chief executives of large fossil fuel companies to be put
on trial for high crimes against humanity and nature, accusing them of
actively spreading doubt about global warming in the same way that
tobacco companies blurred the links between smoking and cancer.

| The Trouble With Permafrost (And A 1000 ppm World)

We’re at 30 billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions a year -- rising
3.3% per year -- and we have to average below 18 billion tons a year
for the entire century if we’re going to stabilize at 450 ppm. We need
to peak around 2015 to 2020 at the latest, then drop at least 60% by
2050 to 15 billion tons (4 billion tons of carbon), and then go to near
zero net carbon emissions by 2100. That’s why a sober guy like IPCC head Rajendra Pachauri, said in
November: “If there’s no action before 2012, that’s too late. What we
do in the next two to three years will determine our future. This is
the defining moment.” Or as I told Technology Review, “The point is,
whatever technology we’ve got now -- that’s what we are stuck with to
avoid catastrophic warming.”

| Why Bother?

Why bother? That really is the big question facing us as individuals
hoping to do something about climate change, and it’s not an easy one
to answer. I don’t know about you, but for me the most upsetting moment
in “An Inconvenient Truth” came long after Al Gore scared the hell out
of me, constructing an utterly convincing case that the very survival
of life on earth as we know it is threatened by climate change. No, the
really dark moment came during the closing credits, when we are asked
to . . . change our light bulbs. That’s when it got really depressing.
The immense disproportion between the magnitude of the problem Gore had
described and the puniness of what he was asking us to do about it was
enough to sink your heart.

As the pace of global warming kicks into overdrive, the hollow optimism
of climate activists, along with the desperate responses of some of the
world's most prominent climate scientists, is preventing us from
focusing on the survival requirements of the human enterprise.

The school governor who challenged the screening of Al Gore's climate
change documentary in secondary schools was funded by a Scottish
quarrying magnate who established a controversial lobbying group to
attack environmentalists' claims about global warming.

| The Swift-Boating Of James Hansen

On September 22, 2007 an article by Doug Ware of KUTV.com called
"Global Warming Scientist Once Warned Of 'Ice Age' " began making the
rounds. The heart of the story was that famed scientist James Hansen
had warned in 1971 of "a modern day ice age, which would cause the
planet's temperature to plummet as many as six degrees". Did the reporter get his facts right, or did he do a hatchet job on James Hansen? Apparently the latter. What follows is Hansen's response to Ware's article.
