| Parallel Universes: Do They Really Exist?
|
|
| posted on Tuesday, November 18, 2008
|
|
The Hollywood blockbuster, The Golden Compass, adapted from the first
volume of Pullman's classic sci-fi trilogy, "His Dark Materials"
portrays various universes as only one reality among many, but how
realistic is this kind of classic sci-fi plot? While it hasn’t been
proven yet, many highly respected and credible scientists are now
saying there’s reason to believe that parallel dimensions could very
well be more than figments of our imaginations.

If you haven't done so already, I encourage you to begin living like
our hardy, self-reliant ancestors did: put enough food, water, first
aid, and emergency supplies away to deal with potential disturbances;
start a private garden and/or join a community garden; get to know your
neighbors; build community with your family and friends; cultivate a
relationship with the Divine. The kind of safety nets that society has
told us we can count on -- bank accounts, insurance policies, pension
plans, investments, governmental agencies coming to our rescue, etc. --
will, I believe, no longer provide the security they once did. Instead,
the time has come for us to begin to depend on ourselves, one another,
and the deep Forces of life (God/Spirit) that so many of us have lost
touch with...

| Space Euphoria

In February, 1971, Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell experienced the
little understood phenomenon sometimes called the “Overview Effect”. He
describes being completely engulfed by a profound sense of universal
connectedness. Without warning, he says, a feeing of bliss,
timelessness, and connectedness began to overwhelm him. He describes
becoming instantly and profoundly aware that each of his constituent
atoms were connected to the fragile planet he saw in the window and to
every other atom in the Universe. He described experiencing an intense
awareness that Earth, with its humans, other animal species, and
systems were all one synergistic whole. He says the feeling that rushed
over him was a sense of interconnected euphoria. He was not the first
-- nor the last -- to experience this strange “cosmic connection”.

In unexpected ways, science and mysticism are joining hands and
reinforcing each other. That’s bound to lead to new movements that
emphasize self-transcendence but put little stock in divine law or
revelation. Orthodox believers are going to have to defend particular
doctrines and particular biblical teachings. They’re going to have to
defend the idea of a personal God, and explain why specific theologies
are true guides for behavior day to day. I’m not qualified to take
sides, believe me. I’m just trying to anticipate which way the debate
is headed. We’re in the middle of a scientific revolution. It’s going
to have big cultural effects.

Most of you know that I have been a fan of all things integral for many years now, especially Ken Wilber's version. What, exactly, is integral? How did it evolve? What does it have to do
with our daily activities and spiritual practices?

Rudi Affolter and Gwen Tighe have both experienced strong religious
visions. He is an atheist; she a Christian. He thought he had died; she
thought she had given birth to Jesus. Both have temporal lobe epilepsy. Like
other forms of epilepsy, the condition causes fitting but it is also
associated with religious hallucinations. Research into why people like
Rudi and Gwen saw what they did has opened up a whole field of brain
science: neurotheology.

| Dean Radin: 'Science & The Taboo Of Psi'
|
|
| posted on Friday, January 25, 2008
|
|
Do telepathy, clairvoyance and other "psi" abilities exist? The
majority of the general population believes that they do, and yet fewer
than one percent of mainstream academic institutions have any faculty
known for their interest in these frequently reported experiences. Why
is a topic of enduring and widespread interest met with such resounding
silence in academia? The answer is not due to a lack of scientific
evidence, or even to a lack of scientific interest, but rather involves
a taboo. Dean Radin discusses the nature of this taboo, some of the
empirical evidence and critical responses, and speculate on the
implications.
