    Other Realms: Spiritual Experiences

    The Cotard Delusion
posted on Wednesday, March 26, 2008

Here's another "neuropsychiatric disorder" to add to the growing list of brain and/or psychological afflictions that can upend normal perceptions of physical reality.

TED: The Brain Scientist Who Had A Stroke
posted on Thursday, March 13, 2008

I just finished posting a VERY interesting video on two of NHNE's websites. The TED folks, who just released it, had this to say about it: "Take 18 minutes to watch this astonishing talk from Harvard-trained brain scientist Jill Bolte Taylor. It drew a huge standing ovation in the first session of the conference and, by general consensus, counts as one of the most memorable TED talks of all time."

Eckhart Tolle & Oprah Break New Ground On The Net
posted on Monday, March 10, 2008

I invite you to join Oprah and myself in our weekly online sessions. We will be studying A New Earth, but not as an academic subject or in order to acquire new theories or beliefs. Our aim is to explore through the teachings of the book the most important question you can ask: What is the purpose of my life and how do I fulfill that purpose? It will be a course in self-exploration and awakening. It will help you see what the dysfunctional patterns are within yourself that create unnecessary conflict and suffering and prevent you from finding true fulfillment. Hopefully, it will also help you access a dimension within yourself that perhaps you didn't know existed or only caught glimpses of on rare occasions. Don't be trapped for the rest of your life within the narrow confines of your personal history and your conditioned personality and allow your life to be transformed from within, through the power of consciousness itself.

Was Moses High On Hallucinogens When He Saw God?
posted on Thursday, March 06, 2008

The Bible tells us that when the Children of Israel left Egypt, they had a 40-year trip through the desert before reaching the Promised Land. Now a leading Israeli academic has a new theory about exactly what kind of trip it was. In the philosophy journal Time and Mind, Benny Shanon states that key events of the Old Testament are actually records of visions by ancient Israelites high on hallucinogens. Shanon is a professor at Jerusalem's Hebrew University, where he used to head the psychology department.

One of the most fascinating talks at the TED conference <http://www.ted.com/> so far was given by Jill Bolte Taylor <http://drjilltaylor.com/>, a neuroanatomist, who gave a riveting account of a stroke she experienced in 1996. (TED stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design.)

    The History Channel: Presidential Prophecies
posted on Thursday, February 21, 2008

It's a little-known, but fascinating aspect of the Presidency. Throughout history, numerous US Presidents have claimed to prophesy through visions. In 1778, George Washington claimed that an apparition of a woman appeared to him one evening and foretold the birth, progress, and future of the America. While in office, both Woodrow Wilson and Ronald Reagan consulted psychics who predicted their deaths. Franklin Delano Roosevelt consulted a psychic in the last years of his Presidency about post-WWII world relations. Perhaps the most well-known Presidential prophecies concern Abraham Lincoln, who participated in séances and experienced visions -- including an incident that predicted his assassination. Join us for a Presidential peek at the past.

Ritual Of Dealing With Demons Undergoes Revival
posted on Monday, February 11, 2008

The Rev. Andrzej Trojanowski, a soft-spoken Pole, plans to build a "spiritual oasis" that will serve as Europe's only center dedicated to performing exorcisms. With the blessing of the local Catholic archbishop and theological support from the Vatican, the center will aid a growing number of Poles possessed by evil forces or the devil himself, he said.

BBC Documentary: 'God On The Brain'
posted on Sunday, January 27, 2008

Rudi Affolter and Gwen Tighe have both experienced strong religious visions. He is an atheist; she a Christian. He thought he had died; she thought she had given birth to Jesus. Both have temporal lobe epilepsy. Like other forms of epilepsy, the condition causes fitting but it is also associated with religious hallucinations. Research into why people like Rudi and Gwen saw what they did has opened up a whole field of brain science: neurotheology.

How Scientists Talk About UFO Sightings
posted on Sunday, January 27, 2008

This is an embarrassingly shadow, uninformed, and dismissive perspective on the exceptionally complicated subject of UFOs (and related topics), but I wanted to be sure all of you saw it. What I found most interesting about this article was the part that discussed Michael Persinger using his famous "God Helmet" to try and induce a mystical experience in famed evolutionary biologist (and rabid atheist) Richard Dawkins. More about that in a followup article.
