EDITOR'S COMMENT:
A couple weeks ago, I sent out a post from Arlington Institute that asked "if you, or someone you know, experiences any kind of significant suggestion (dream, intuition, etc.) that something big and disruptive is about to happen in the coming weeks" to let them know.
ARLINGTON INSTITUTE: IMPENDING EVENT ALERT (09/10/08)
Several of readers wrote back questioning how wise and appropriate it was for me to pass along this kind of warning. After several such queries, I thought it best to write something that addressed these concerns. For those of you who may be interested, here it is...

ONE READER'S COMMENT:
"Regarding the Arlington Institute post. I myself have had prescient dreams, though always of a personal nature. I do, however, believe that there could be some sort of collective field or current that distills these dreams to receptive persons. What troubles me, however, is that there could also be the possibility that people could contribute to a terrible self-fulfilling event. Do you think the ethical plusses outweigh the negatives in this situation? I am not wishing to be argumentative, and I'd sincerely value your opinion, as you are in touch with a wider current of responses."
MY RESPONSE:
You've raised a very important question (several other readers raised similar issues). Here's my current take on this question.
Imagine four different dam bursting scenarios:
Scenario One: In scenario one, the dam has burst and the flood waters are headed our way. In this case, an intuitive prediction (via dreams, intuitions, synchronicities, whatever) is warning us about something that has already happened. The flood waters are, right now, coming. They can't be stopped. They will run their course. If we do not move, we (and those we love) will be washed away. The warnings are clear, simple, literal. Move or be killed.
Scenario Two: In this scenario, the dam has developed large cracks, but hasn't burst yet. In this case, our intuitive premonitions have not yet materialized. Thus, they are warning us about a problem and either encouraging us (or someone else) to fix them, or prepare for the dam to burst.
Scenario Three: In scenario three our dam may be perfectly sound, or it might have a few cracks. In either case, a bunch of people begin to focus their awareness on it. Some of these people think it is going to break; some think it is going to be fine. If large numbers of people begin to focus on social events, such as stock markets, politics, social movements, etc., they obviously can affect the outcome of the situation. Mass paranoia can cause monumental upheavals, while calm-minded leaders (and groups), at the right time and with the right words and emotions, can stop, even reverse and transform raging cultural tsunamis. But can they affect physical objects like a dam? The evidence seems to suggest that, yes, human awareness, thought, consciousness can and does influence physical reality. If that's the case, then yes, it is important that we be careful what we focus our thoughts, intentions, and emotions on. On the other hand, most people's minds and emotions are so undisciplined that I doubt very much that they could produce any kind of sustained physical disturbance through thought, intention, and emotion alone.
Scenario Four: This is our wild card scenario: Our premonition is not about the dam, but about something else (the dam, in other words, is a symbol for something else); or our premonition could be about a future event that may or may not take place; or it could be an event that may or may not take place in another dimension, or parallel universe that we have somehow tapped into; or any number of other possibilities.
That's four very basic scenarios. None of them include the idea that some challenging, even catastrophic events, may be helpful and necessary -- they may be needed to produce growth, healing, a change in direction, a new leap in evolution, whatever. When we tie this into our scenarios, we have to make room for the idea that tragic events are sometimes OK and, what's more, we may be called to help, or allow them to happen. Or, alternately, since tragic events sometimes serve an important part of our growing process, it's perfectly OK for large numbers of people to use their thoughts, intensions, and emotions to create tragic experiences because, on some level, we all learn from them.
So the rabbit hole goes very deep.
But here's the bottom line, as far as I can see anyway: In order to effectively judge which scenario we are working with, and correctly discern what our part in it is, we must first discern the nature of the event -- and that means paying attention to our premonitions and to whatever collaborating information we receive from the outer world. In other words, it is dangerous to ignore premonitions because they could be warning us, accurately, that a dam has burst, or is about to burst. And if we are dealing with scenario three, or four, then awareness will help us figure out what we are dealing with, and then move things in whatever direction we believe is best for all concerned. Not paying attention, on the other hand, doesn't help anything. Instead, of being forces that can change, alter, or contribute to the events in our world, we become victims swept up in whatever tides wash to shore.
As far as I can see, then, the best any of us can do, is try to be as conscious as we possibly can, make whatever decisions we make from that space, and then make adjustments as needed as our awareness deepens and expands. I think we also need to learn to be comfortable with mistakes -- both those we make as well as those made by others -- and cultivate a deep awareness that the universe is big enough to accommodate any screw ups human beings, either individually or collectively, can make.
That's my two cents. I hesitated to say anything because this is such a deep topic, but there you go. I hope it was helpful.
