| Zip-It Drain Cleaner (& iPhone Battery Update) |

EDITOR'S COMMENT:
File this one under "how to save yourself a lot of money and get the job done in record-breaking time".
This is also proof that your editor has to deal with the ordinary hassles of everyday life -- and, equally important, when he discovers something really cool, he immediately thinks of sharing it with you.
Here's the back story:
I had a clogged bathtub, with a weird stopper that I wasn't sure how to remove. Normally, I'll take a plunger to tubs and sinks that begin to clog. And if a plunger doesn't work, I resort to snakes and other plumbing paraphernalia. But before getting too carried away, I went to my local hardware store and asked them if they knew how I could remove the weird stopper. They said, "why remove it when you can probably remove whatever is blocking the drain with a Zip It Drain Cleaner". And then they showed me the smartest (and least expensive) plumbing idea I have ever seen. I bought it (for $3.50), stuck it down my drain, and 10 seconds later, the drain was completely unclogged. After spending a few moments admiring the simplicity of the thing, and a few more moments wondering how many million dollars the inventor is making, my next thought was, "hum, an invention like this would solve all of NHNE's financial woes."
But I digress.
If you are a human being who lives in a house with any kind of plumbing I strongly encourage you to get one of these little gizmos (see below). That's my tip for the day that will probably save you (either now or in the future) a lot of time, trouble, and buckeroos.

P.S. Speaking of clever ideas, I ended up buying the $20.00 battery replacement for my iPhone that I reported on in an earlier email:
HOW TO CHANGE AN IPONE BATTERY (08/24/2008): http://groups.yahoo.com/group/nhnenews/message/14797
That saved me the ridiculous cost of having to replace my current, perfectly fine iPhone with a new one. But getting the old battery out and the new battery in was more challenging than I expected. I'm glad to report that I succeeded, but my iPhone is no longer in the pristine condition it was before its operation. Apple really (and I mean REALLY) did not design their iPhones to be taken a part by iPhone lovers. My advice: if you have an iPhone and are considering changing the battery yourself, don't do it unless you are willing to live with an iPhone that is mangled, scratched up version of its former glorious self.

ZIP-IT DRAIN CLEANER HOOKS OUT GUNK
Original Link
I bet this cheap tool is the best bargain on this site. For 2 dollars you get a flexible 24" plastic probe that will remove an alarming amount of hair and gunk clogging your sink or shower drain. It descends easy. You can snake it down without taking off the usual drain plug. The many little reverse (and very sharp!) spines hook hair balls and other unmentionable crap as you carefully back it out. It removes grunge that liquidators won't budge. Sold as disposable, a cautious wipe will keep it going forever. We have a very hairy household; I can't keep the plumbing going without it.
