NASA Renews Search For Kecksburg UFO Documents

NASA RENEWS SEARCH FOR KECKSBURG UFO DOCUMENTS

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration will dive back into its archives to seek out documents on a 1965 UFO incident in Pennsylvania.

The government has fought to keep its files on the incident closed, but changed course due to pressure from a lawsuit brought by Leslie Kean, a UFO investigator and writer based in New York.

The agency had previously turned over documents which Kean said were not responsive to the Freedom of Information request she had filed, an argument that U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan agreed with.

In March, Sullivan rejected NASA's request to throw the case out of court, resulting in negotiations that led to the agency promising that it would conduct a more comprehensive search.

Kean said Friday she sued NASA rather than the Army because the space agency a decade ago released some relevant documents on the case.

"This is about the public's right to know," Kean said. "We would be doing this lawsuit regardless of whether UFO groups were interested in it or not. It's a freeodm of information issue."

Although UFO buffs believe a space craft crashed in the woods near Kecksburg, Pennsylvania -- 40 miles southeast of Pittsburgh -- the Air Force claimed it was merely a meteor.

"They could not find anything," one Air Force memo stated after a late-night search on Dec. 9, 1965. Several NASA employees also were reported to have been at the scene.

Eyewitnesses claimed a flatbed truck transported a large object shaped like an acorn and about the size of a Volkswagen bus away from the scene. A mock-up based on the descriptions of local residents sits behind the Kecksburg Volunteer Fire Department.
