If you were around these parts 10 years ago when those mysterious "Phoenix Lights" were spotted over the Valley, you might remember a news conference held by then-Gov. Fife Symington to spoof the whole UFO frenzy.
Symington told the media that an extraterrestrial had been captured, then trotted out one of his aides, Jay Heiler, dressed in a hokey alien costume, complete with a big head and googly eyes.
Well, it turns out that the Fifester actually saw the lights. In a recent article written by New York-based investigative journalist Leslie Kean, Symington is quoted as saying he saw a large triangular "craft of unknown origin" with lights. "It was dramatic. And it couldn't have been flares because it was too symmetrical. It had a geometric outline, a constant shape," Symington said.
So why is he coming clean now about seeing the lights? Well, because people asked him, Symington told the Buzz on Tuesday.
He said the spoof involving Heiler has been featured in documentaries and TV shows about UFOs, so he sometimes is interviewed about it. Kean called him recently because it is the 10th anniversary of the Phoenix Lights, and CNN was sending a reporter to interview him Tuesday for a segment on Anderson Cooper's show.
Symington, now a pastry chef and political consultant, said he pulled the stunt because he thought people were getting too hysterical about the lights and he wanted to inject a little levity.
"It was totally misunderstood," he said. "It will probably be one of the main reasons I'm remembered."
