SUPPORT THE CO-INTELLIGENCE INSTITUTE AND TOM ATLEE'S WORK NOW By Tom Atlee The Co-Intelligence Institute July 10, 2006

Tom Atlee Writes:
Dear friends,
With this letter, I invite you to support the ongoing work of the Co-Intelligence Institute to promote civic dialogue, strategic conversations, and conscious evolution. Here's a taste of what we've been doing.
For the last six months I have been playing a leading role in teams convening and facilitating two open evolutionary salons <http://www.thegreatstory.org/ev-salon.html> at the Whidbey Institute near Seattle on "Collective Intelligence" (in January) and "Listening into the Future" (in May) -- and we just completed a very successful invitational gathering of leading transformational philanthropists near Boulder Colorado <http://www.co-intelligence.org/PhilanthropyES2006.html>. I was also on the planning team for the "Moving the Edge" event in Denmark in March.
All these strategic conversations have explored how people and organizations can become more conscious agents of healthy evolution in the midst of emerging crises -- a topic also explored in a number of earlier mailings to this list. I am now turning to organizing an invitational gathering of experts on collective intelligence, the editing of an Evolutionary Edge e-newsletter, and the creation of an online space in which hundreds of people will be able to co-create a movement for the conscious evolution of social systems, grounded in science-based but very inspiring understandings of evolutionary dynamics.
As a major part of these initiatives, several colleagues and I will be researching how evolutionary dynamics can inform the work of transforming social systems. Nature has developed powerful approaches to changing and preserving living systems. What lessons might we learn from this most ancient and wise teacher? My initial investigation has revealed few people who have applied evolutionary understandings to the conscious evolution of social systems, so it seems we will be co-founding a major new field.
Meanwhile, board members Adin Rogovin and Heather Tischbein have been organizing a number of civic dialogues in the Portland, Oregon / Vancouver, Washington area. As a member of the advisory board of the Make Democracy Work project of her multi-county regional library system, Heather is helping to initiate a civic dialogue project for youth. Her successful Town Hall Conversation Cafe and emergency preparedness World Cafe have inspired interest in civic dialogue and cafe conversations for nearby district Town Halls, precinct caucuses, and public forums during the upcoming election campaign. She has also hosted a successful intergenerational cafe (with participants from 14-94 years old) and community-wide and in-home interfaith dialogues, as well as catalyzing an event honoring Gandhi's nonviolent movement in South Africa.
In addition to supporting Heather on the Vancouver Projects and handling Evolutionary Salon accounts, Adin has facilitated strategic conversatoins with Awake America and the Democratic Party House District 40 precinct captains. He is also working with the Climate Neutral Network, an independent climate neutral certification NGO (helping people and organizations reduce their climate impact to zero), to convene and facilitate stakeholder dialogues among its network of environmental advisors, sustainable business clients, and consultants.
The Co-Intelligence Board recently reframed its mission, as we have come to see ourselves as a catalyst in three areas. Here is how we currently view the relevance of our work:
1. CONSCIOUS EVOLUTION - This century brings with it profound challenges to -- and opportunities to enhance -- the well-being of communities, societies, humanity, and nature. Most major ecological and societal crises stem from culturally ingrained patterns of thinking and behaving. We find ourselves increasingly challenged to change in fundamental ways -- in fact, to continuously evolve. Each major change stimulates new changes or demands for change in other areas of life. Navigating the "rapids of change" requires a level of wise creative responsiveness. The Co-Intelligence Institute works with others to understand the nature of this capacity for ongoing "conscious evolution" and how to further it in individuals, groups, and society as a whole.
2. STRATEGIC CONVERSATION - A strategic conversation is a high quality, productive conversation designed to release the evolutionary potential in a particular situation. The Co-Intelligence Institute works with others to convene strategic conversations for organizations and activities that are going through evolutionary challenges -- especially those whose work we consider important for society's health, sustainability, or evolution (such as philanthropists). Increasing crises challenge those attempting to make a difference, and we help them break through into greater contribution.
3. CIVIC DIALOGUE - In ideal democratic culture, citizens participate in the co-creation of their collective lives and institutions. They develop their communities and solve communal problems in ways that make sense to them. Diverse citizens learn from each other and enjoy richer relations, deeper insights and wiser solutions through democratic engagement and interaction. The Co-Intelligence Institute works with others to provide guidance on many approaches to community dialogue and deliberation that move a community toward this ideal and call forth its collective intelligence to guide itself and its leaders.
If you share with us a sense of the critical importance and high leverage of these approaches to social change, please join and support us with a generous donation to the Co-Intelligence Institute.
Thank you for your own work for a better world.
Coheartedly, Tom
