In unexpected ways, science and mysticism are joining hands and
reinforcing each other. That’s bound to lead to new movements that
emphasize self-transcendence but put little stock in divine law or
revelation. Orthodox believers are going to have to defend particular
doctrines and particular biblical teachings. They’re going to have to
defend the idea of a personal God, and explain why specific theologies
are true guides for behavior day to day. I’m not qualified to take
sides, believe me. I’m just trying to anticipate which way the debate
is headed. We’re in the middle of a scientific revolution. It’s going
to have big cultural effects.

Say you have a load of donated food to deliver to an orphanage in
Uganda. But due to circumstances beyond your control, you're forced to
make a hard choice: give some of the children enough meals to stave off
hunger for several days and let the rest go hungry, or evenly
distribute a smaller amount of food so that each child feels full for
just a few hours. A study published online today in Science is one of
the first to investigate how the brain wrestles with such morally
charged tradeoffs.

What would you do if you couldn't forget anything in your life? For
most of us, our memories fade as we age, and only the occasional song,
smell or photo will take us back to a particular time and place. But
for the woman formerly known to the world as simply "A.J.," her memory
is so powerful that it dominates her life. She sat down with ABC News'
Diane Sawyer recently to reveal herself publicly in the hopes that
others with unusual memories like hers will come forward and be studied.

We receive a lot of submissions of that would like their work to be
featured in Organic Bytes, but this is honestly one of the best
trailers we've seen in a while. As you've probably read about
previously in Organic Bytes, vast numbers of bees are literally
disappearing all around the world. This movie analyzes why this
mysterious phenomenon is taking place and how dramatically it could
impact the world's food supply in the short term. As a note, the
producers are also seeking donations to bring the movie to a wider
audience.

| Can You Catch Up On Lost Sleep?

Sleep debt is the difference between the amount of sleep you should be
getting and the amount you actually get. It's a deficit that grows
every time we skim some extra minutes off our nightly slumber. "People
accumulate sleep debt surreptitiously," says psychiatrist William C.
Dement, founder of the Stanford University Sleep Clinic. Studies show
that such short-term sleep deprivation leads to a foggy brain, worsened
vision, impaired driving, and trouble remembering. Long-term effects
include obesity, insulin resistance, and heart disease. And most
Americans suffer from chronic deprivation.

The government's new cyber-security "Manhattan Project" is so secretive
that a key Senate oversight panel has been reduced to writing a letter
to beg for answers to the most basic questions, such as what's going
on, what's the point and what about privacy laws.
