| Feedback On Integral: 'Have You Guys Gone Off The Deep End?!'
|
|
| posted on Wednesday, June 11, 2008

I received a letter yesterday from one of NHNE's long-time fans and
supporters that expressed frustration at my growing enthusiasm for all
things integral. 'Have you guys all just gone off the deep end?!,' he
asked. Good question. What follows is Jim Torson's query, followed by my attempt to address
his concerns -- and clean up any confusion I may have created in the
minds (and hearts) of the rest of you...

In scanning the array of potential disasters that are rapidly headed
our way I could only identify one response that was broad, deep, and
inspired enough to deal with the cascading problems that are building
steam and headed our way. And that was to figure out a way to help as
many people as possible raise their level of consciousness as fast as
possible. Specifically, that meant finding ways to accelerate personal
growth, deepen our sense of connectedness (to one another, the rest of
life, and the divine), and, eventually, begin to tap into the magical
power of collective intelligence...

| The Integral Relationship Preamble

What are the core qualities, principles, and practices that define a
truly healthy relationship? The Integral Sedona group I am apart of has
been exploring this all-important topic and some of what I/we have
discovered has now been formulated into a short essay. You can read
and/or download copies of that essay by visiting this website...

| Ken Wilber On Integral 'Third-Way' Politics
|

| posted on Tuesday, May 27, 2008

While surveying the current American political landscape, it can be
easy to feel as though the country is divided into two radically
opposing populations: the Left and the Right. When watching the
speeches, interviews, and debates on either side of the fence, there is
such an incredible difference between the tone, rhetoric, and messages
coming from the two major political parties that many pundits have
commented that it is as though we live in two utterly different
Americas, with very little overlap between the two. But the truth is,
we do not live in two Americas, but in a single America composed of at
least four or five different sets of values, all crammed together into
a two-party political system that is becoming increasingly incapable of
representing these wildly different perspectives. Many are beginning to
recognize this systemic inadequacy and are searching for a genuinely
Integral "Third Way" politics -- a new way to break free from the
restrictions of such rigidly calcified party lines, transcending both
sides of the partisan divide, including the very best of both parties,
without resorting to the effete compromise of mere centrism that has
been typical of the political "Third Way" to date.

| What Is Integral?

Most of you know that I am a big fan of all things integral -- so big a
fan, in fact, that I am currently spearheading efforts to anchor a
vibrant, integrally-informed community in Sedona, Arizona (where I
live), and also help other folks anchor integral communities in their
part of the world... I wanted to share with you an attempt to condense
integral theory and practice -- which can be mind-numbingly complicated
-- into something average folks can get their heads around.

| The Emergence of 'The Higher We'

There are two discussions I wanted to be sure all of you had a chance
to listen to. Both conversations revolve around an emerging topic
called "The Higher We". Coined by Andrew Cohen, the term "The Higher
We" refers to what Cohen believes (and I agree) is the next stage of
our individual and collective development. It is "an experience of
shared consciousness that emerges when people come together beyond ego
and narcissism, and points to a radically new way to live and relate to
one another".

"You have this situation as Tom Atlee says 'where things are getting
worse and worse, better and better, faster and faster'. You've got
global warming. And the twenty or thirty other global challenges that
are already starting to have tremendous effect... All the technologies
that we need to solve all of these problems already exist but they're
not being sought out because the mentality of the prevailing elite
literally can't see them for what they actually are -- you know
Einstein's point that you can't solve a problem with the same
consciousness that produced the problem -- so the fact that there is an
emerging carrier population that understands... the technologies that
we now consider to be alternative have to become mainstream in a very
big hurry... So how do you mobilize a campaign that would make them
self aware, conscious of their power, and cohesively enough politically
oriented so that they begin to make the kind of demands that are
essential if we are going to avert complete catastrophe? ...Cause you
can't get 'better and better, worse and worse, faster and faster'
without something going pop sooner or later in a way that would be
potentially catastrophic..."

"I have a dream." Oops. Wrong speech. Actually, I HAD a dream and the dream nudged me to get involved with a
bunch of folks who were eager to learn more about integral theory and
practice. Now, 14 meetings later, your editor is at the helm of this
group, doing what I can to help anchor an integral system in Sedona --
and, eventually, help it spread like wildfire to other communities...
