Security Fears Over Food & Fuel Crisis
posted on Monday, June 23, 2008

Western countries have upgraded the food and fuel crisis into a national security concern as they fear record high energy and agriculture commodity costs are destabilising key developing regions of the world.

Scientists Find Bugs That Eat Waste & Excrete Petrol
posted on Thursday, June 19, 2008

“Ten years ago I could never have imagined I’d be doing this,” says Greg Pal, 33, a former software executive, as he squints into the late afternoon Californian sun. “I mean, this is essentially agriculture, right? But the people I talk to -- especially the ones coming out of business school -- this is the one hot area everyone wants to get into.” He means bugs. To be more precise: the genetic alteration of bugs -- very, very small ones -- so that when they feed on agricultural waste such as woodchips or wheat straw, they do something extraordinary. They excrete crude oil.

Earth 2100: Is This Century Our Last?
posted on Friday, June 13, 2008

Are we living in the last century of our civilization? Is it possible that all of our technology, knowledge and wealth cannot save us from ourselves? Could our society actually be heading towards collapse? According to many of the world's top scientists, the answer is yes, unless we take action now.

Oil's Biggest Day Yet Drags Down Stocks
posted on Saturday, June 07, 2008

Oil prices made their biggest single-day leap ever Friday -- clearing $139, dragging the Dow Jones industrials down nearly 400 points and raising the once-unthinkable prospect of $150 oil and even higher gas prices by the Fourth of July.

    Send David To JFKU
posted on Monday, June 02, 2008

In scanning the array of potential disasters that are rapidly headed our way I could only identify one response that was broad, deep, and inspired enough to deal with the cascading problems that are building steam and headed our way. And that was to figure out a way to help as many people as possible raise their level of consciousness as fast as possible. Specifically, that meant finding ways to accelerate personal growth, deepen our sense of connectedness (to one another, the rest of life, and the divine), and, eventually, begin to tap into the magical power of collective intelligence...

With Energy Fears Rising, New Survivalists Prepare
posted on Tuesday, May 27, 2008

A few years ago, Kathleen Breault was just another suburban grandma, driving countless hours every week, stopping for lunch at McDonald's, buying clothes at the mall, watching TV in the evenings. That was before Breault heard an author talk about the bleak future of the world's oil supply. Now, she's preparing for the world as we know it to disappear.

Oil Expert Warns Of $12-$15-A-Gallon Gas
posted on Friday, May 23, 2008

It may be the mother of all doom and gloom gas price predictions: $12 for a gallon of gas is “inevitable.” Robert Hirsch, Management Information Services Senior Energy Advisor, gave a dire warning about the potential future of gas prices on CNBC’s May 20 “Squawk Box”. He told host Becky Quick there was no single thing that would solve the problem, due to the enormity of the problem.

U.S. Begins To Break Foreign Oil 'Addiction'
posted on Wednesday, May 21, 2008

The US is starting to break its “addiction” to foreign oil as high prices, more efficient cars, and the use of ethanol significantly cut the share of its oil imports for the first time since 1977.

    Preparing For Hard Times
posted on Monday, May 05, 2008

For three years, my husband has talked about taking to the hills. About buying a smallholding on Exmoor where, with our four-year-old daughter, we can safely survive the coming storm -- famine, pestilence and a total breakdown of society. I would wait for his lectures to finish, then return to my own interests. I had no time for the end of civilisation. As an editor on a glossy magazine until a few months ago, I was too busy. There was always a new Anya Hindmarch bag to buy, or a George Clooney premiere to attend. But recently, I've wavered. Much of what he has been predicting has come true: global economic meltdown, looming environmental disaster, a sharp rise in oil and food prices that has already led to the rationing of rice in the US, and riots in dozens of countries worldwide.
