SCI FI CHANNEL: COUNTDOWN TO DOOMSDAY June 14, 2006
SCI FI Channel is about to give the world a wake-up call. It's about the next mass extinction -- a coming disaster that will wipe out life on Earth and destroy the human race.
Counting down to doomsday, SCI FI reveals the top 10 ways the world can end tomorrow. Using CGI and cutting-edge special effects, we'll bring each terrifying scenario to life.
Massive volcanic eruptions, global pandemics, asteroid impacts -- viewers will witness vivid simulations of these and other nightmarish catastrophes, brought to life by the knowledge and imagination of the world's leading scientists.
And as each catastrophe leads inexorably to its tragic conclusion, the hands of the doomsday clock move another minute closer to midnight….
............
DOOMSDAY SCENARIOS:
Supervolcano Asteroid Impact Global Pandemic Mass Extinction Giant Solar Flare Nuclear Terrorism Global Warming Gamma-Ray Burst Machine Rebellion Alien Invasion
...........
THE DOOMSDAY POLL:
http://www.scifi.com/doomsday/survey/
One thousand Americans were polled in April 2006 regarding their thoughts and concerns about possible real-life "doomsday" events. This online study was conducted by TNS market research.
WHAT WE LEARNED:
- Virtually all (99%) Americans concede that at least one of the ten "doomsday" scenarios could ever potentially happen.
- Data suggest that Americans tend to be most concerned with possible real-life events that they think are preventable and/or could potentially happen in their lifetime.
- Americans are most concerned with the threat of terrorism, followed by global warming and a disease pandemic, such as the Avian Flu. Some are also concerned about an ecosystem collapse.
- In fact, 76% of Americans believe that "humans may ultimately cause their own extinction."
- Americans are divided as to whether our country is prepared for a series of terrorist strikes and/or a disease pandemic such as the Avian Flu. While the country is perceived as being more prepared for these events than for other "doomsday" scenarios, most Americans do not believe that our country is prepared for either terrorism or a disease pandemic.
- In fact, 31% of Americans do not think the country is prepared for any of the 10 "doomsday" events presented in this study.
- The majority of Americans believe that asteroid collisions, supervolcanoes, solar flares and gamma-ray bursts could happen, but relatively few believe that these events will happen in their lifetime. Most Americans feel these events are "unavoidable." However, it is important to note that data suggest that many Americans do not know enough about solar flares or gamma rays to assess their level of threat.
- The majority of Americans do not believe they are at risk of an alien invasion or a world with robots in command.
- Approximately one-quarter of Americans have a strong "doomsday" outlook and strongly agree with the following statements: "I fear for the future of mankind," and, "Life as we know it could come to an abrupt end any day."
- Americans are divided as to whether one can actually prepare for a "doomsday" event. However, 24% of Americans say their household "has emergency supplies ready in case of a 'doomsday' event."

EARTH SAFE FROM COSMIC EXPLOSIONS
By Govert Schilling
ScienceNOW Daily News
April 12, 2006
Mankind is safe -- at least from the devastating, destructive power of
long-lasting gamma-ray bursts (GBR). Although these powerful cosmic
flashes pack more energy than the sun will release in its entire
10-billion-year lifetime, astronomers have concluded that our Milky Way
galaxy has enough metal to preclude such a detonation.

Whew, what a list! I'd add "ice age" to that first section, but maybe that would be included under reversal of magnetic fields.
My favorite by far is #20. I'll vote for that one. |

I'm with Bonnie. #20 is definitely my choice. Actually, isn't it actually so, that this is all a dream? So let's keep on row, row, rowing, gently down the stream... it will be interesting to see where the current takes us.
As for the pandemic thing, I've been reading the suggestions for girding for survival. Perhaps I can do what it will take to survive such a thing, but my kids are "too busy" to take very good care of themselves and their children. They are accustomed to being able to take pills for just about anything - probably this is why so many of the younger generation are not concerned about bugs and germs and failing immune systems and such. In their lifetimes there have been cures for such things. As I think about it, I am not sure I am keen on surviving in a world that does not include my loved ones. And so... ? 'Tis a puzzlement. |

The world will end by disillusionment because only illusions will end, being encompassed by the boundaries of space and time. In the end when all our illusions have drawn to a close we will be left with only the truth, the endless truth... |

| SENSING THE END : I have been seeing an absence of overall good human spirit and an increase of pervasive evil I know a lot of this effect is the instant information flow and worldwide coverage.Anyway theres no creativity anymore everything is deteriorating,no new ideas that fit.Re hash of every past success or failure. We are failing at an alarming rate, families ,marriages, health, sanity, memory, business, relationships, ourselves, our God.Heading for disaster We have to be blindly pulled along with Israel into this skirmish that could usher in the end of days.We should stand with Israel ! They are the true children of God and they will be given another chance to accept Jesus as Savior. There are millions of christians praying for the end and millions praying for some resolution it is none the less borrowed time anyway.I am praying that in Gods Eternal and perfect wisdom I will rest and look forward to whatever it is . |

It's hard to disagree with the list of alarming failures evident in the society around us BUT I have a different interpretation. I believe that when a massive change is underway, the old structures tend to crumble in order to make way for the new. The failures may not actually be bad news... they may be temporary (yet excruciating) pain while the new is forming.
Or I could be an incurable optimist. I don't enjoy Fear, so I prefer the more optimistic viewpoint, which seems to have an equal likelihood of being true. I'm excited about the future. |

I suppose we could start fom a different point - and say that the world a we know it is ending already, e.g. global heating is well underway, as is long lasting contamination/toxification of air/land/water, as is species/ ecosystem destruction - and development of conditions (e.g. misuse of antibiotics) for global pandemics. At the same time, there is probably good reason to believe that there is a correlated rise of those with knowledge, understanding and skills to work out more intelligent approaches to human-produced threats - and to deal with the other risks. The latter is in a race with the former. The operational question is what can be done to support, improve and accelerate the development of sufficient leadership and management for a 'soft landing' - with real sustainability. This is my academic work. The good news from 20 years experience is that enough is probably now known technically of what needs to be done - and only in the last couple of years, how to manage it. In brief, we have the technical and managerial knowledge and understanding - although held amongst very few. One part of what is now needed is dissemination - getting the knowledge, understanding and skills to every manager and leader - and ensuring that we have enough sufficiently well-trained leaders in place over the next five or so years (say) by 2010-2012.

Our society, our humanity, is so brain washed with daily life, life as 'we' know it that seeing the latest updates and findings of Earths results as of now and what to expact, causes, timelines, and what have you, some people just take it as entertainment. It's on tv. They're not experiencing it at the moment. So there's nothing to worry about. They don't know what to believe. They know they have to be at work in the morning. Bills need to paid. And that's the life cycle they know. The reality is our world. Mother Earth. The how and why we're here.( Scientificly, anyway). The quirks of this planet cease to exist in some of our minds. Now that, my friends, is our doom. So many people seam to not take this seriously or is uneducated or just could give one less than a flying fuck. |

| This world on all levels is at a very precarious tipping point.Deterioration at all levels spiritual physical environmental and intellectual. The problem is that these are all intertwined and will create a downward spiral like never seen before.Hold your loved ones tight and provide for family.Things are going to get ugly from here. |

AMEN Nina Grant. Couldn't have said it better myself! People seem to not care about anything but themselves. People cannot see the future, just the present. I know humans will perish, one way or another. I want to be alive when that day happens........I should wish to be dead instead and don't have to go through the suffering, but why do I want to be alive for the doomsday?.........to say to all humanity: "I TOLD YOU SO" |

| Concentrating on how the world will end is an exercise in mental masturbation achieving nothing. What is important is, whether the Earth comes or goes, We are ETERNAL and DIVINE. Any belief that stems from an ideology that deems man as mortal will result in actions and behaviors that will lead to chaos and destruction as we race at light speed to understand it all. Once we finally come to the realization that FREEWILL is not the path for man to take and begin to relinquish our egotistical autotomy to that intelligence accountable for the perfection and harmony of it all, this kind of doomsday dialog will cease to exist. Intelligence is not out forte; it is our Achilles heel. Any delving into the mind for any reason other than to achieve perfection and harmony for all mankind is extremely hazardous. It’s called “PANDORA’S BOX”. Having survived in the chaos for thousands of years, it is understandable why man would create scenarios depicting the end of his existence. Granted any one of these scenarios could transpire and we will approach them from a perspective based on knowledge never before accessible in the mind of man. Once we surrender our autotomy and align ourselves with the perfection and harmony we were created for will we be led to the answers we so desperately need. This will be a group effort utilizing the talents and abilities of all those in tune with the infinite MIND OF GOD. |
